Peter Hujar: Rialto Book

£50.00

by Rodovid press

This exhibition catalogue explores the early career and influential photography of Peter Hujar, featuring 77 photographs from his first fifteen years as a professional photographer, including previously unpublished works.

Published by Rodovid Press in Kyiv in conjunction with the artist’s exhibition at The Ukrainian Museum, the catalogue provides new insights into seminal and lesser-known aspects of Hujar’s practice, including his life and work in New York’s Ukrainian Village. A consummate technician, Hujar created highly influential portraits of people and animals, as well as landscapes, characterised by exquisite black-and-white tonalities. Highly emotional yet stripped of excess, his photographs are always beautiful, although rarely in a conventional way.

Three important interviews with Hujar’s closest friends and colleagues, together with a scholarly essay on his work with photographer Richard Avedon, chronicle his ceaseless creative exploration and observation of life in New York’s East Village.
