"Plants weave through Ukrainian culture, their flowering tendrils decorating shirt-sleeves, towels, house walls and ritual objects. But these plant symbols aren't there for beauty alone.
Plants have magical and medicinal power. They symbolise the celebration of life returning each season with the movement of the sun. In Ukraine, ancient agrarian customs are still celebrated: Green holiday, Kupala, Kolyada. These rituals pay attention to seasonal plants and the power that they bring. On important days the magical plants would be woven into a wreath, the shape of the revolving sun. The wedding vinok, or the wreaths made for Kupala. Worn on the head the magical wreath is a talisman. No evil may touch you."
