This book compiles testimonies and stories from cultural practitioners who, between 2014 and 2022, worked toward the revitalization of cities across Luhansk and Donetsk. The idea of "culture" is multifaceted, so the volume brings together diverse initiatives and perspectives to portray cities through individual experiences, generational lenses, worldviews, and working methods.

Since 2014, a wide network of activists, cultural and social initiatives, and both local and national organizations have operated across cities in the Luhansk and Donetsk regions. In response to the new challenges brought by war, civil society mobilized to address shared problems and uncover new opportunities for urban and community development.

Gareleya Neotodryosh (“a gallery that cannot be torn off”) was created in Lysychansk (Luhansk region) in an effort to establish new exhibition spaces for young and contemporary artists, where they won’t face conservative criticism or censorship. Garleya’s goal is to support young emerging artists from the Donbas region by providing them with a platform to showcase their works and encourage them to continue pursuing their art.
